On May 30th, the Silk Road Institute celebrated its second anniversary, and embarked on an exciting new chapter by hosting a Gala & Benefit Dinner, featuring keynote speaker and special guest – Zarqa Nawaz.
Zarqa Nawaz is the creator of the first sitcom about a Muslim Canadian community Little Mosque on the Prairie. She is the author of her best selling comedic memoir Laughing All the Way to the Mosque. In 2005, Zarqa Nawaz made the ground-breaking documentary Me and the Mosque, for the National Film Board of Canada about Muslim women’s battle with patriarchy in the mosque which ultimately inspired the television series.
