Haniya is a litigation lawyer at the Department of Justice with over 17 years of practice in multidisciplinary areas of the law, including dealing with high profile matters involving judicial reviews, civil and Charter issues. She is currently the Ward 12 Representative for the Parent Involvement Advisory Committee to the Toronto District School Board (TDSB).
Haniya is also Co-Chair of the Islamic Heritage Month (IHM) Planning Committee for the TDSB. She leads a team of over 50 parents and educators across Toronto and created the first IHM Poster for the TDSB, a Resource Guidebook, and events to support educators in the celebration of IHM and encourage a cross-cultural exchange to aid in demystifying stereotypes and fight racism and Islamophobia. This positive work has received wide recognition throughout the city of Toronto and across Canada. Haniya is also a busy mom and a voice for parent engagement and inclusive education.
