Creative Arts Bursary – Header

The Silk Road Institute Creative Arts Bursaries

We are delighted to announce the launching of the 2018-2019 Silk Road Institute Creative Arts Bursaries. This year, two awards, in the amount of $3,500 CAD and $1,000, are to be granted to two meritorious students at the college or university level enrolled in a creative arts program in Québec to assist in meeting their academic or living expenses.

The aim of the bursary is to foster interest in the creative arts among young Muslims in Québec and to encourage the widest possible range of cultural expression in the multi-faceted Muslim community.

An often under-represented segment of the population, young Muslims artists pursuing an academic career in the arts, or contributing to Canadian arts and culture, often lack the tools to realize their full artistic potential. The Silk Road Institute Creative Arts Bursaries are one step towards creating opportunities for young Muslim artists to create and flourish, and to strengthen the diversity of the arts in Canada.

2018-2019 Application Deadline

Friday July 13th, 2018.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to be considered for the awards you must:

  • Self-identify as a Muslim (this bursary is strictly non-sectarian).
  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Be pursuing studies in Montréal or the province of Québec.
  • Be between the ages of 18 and 30.
  • Be enrolled in a creative arts program at a university or college (i.e. creative writing, poetry, painting, sculpture, photography, filmmaking, music, theatre, etc.) or a structured educational or training setting (i.e. a conservatory or fine arts academy). You may also be engaged in an experimental project outside the strictly academic milieu.
  • Note: Silk Road Institute Board or Executive members and their direct relations are ineligible to apply.

Assessment Criteria

A three-member committee will adjudicate all applications. The committee will review the applications based on the following assessment criteria:

  • The applicant’s prior and/or expected artistic contributions to the arts in Canada and her/his role in fostering diversity in the arts and cross-cultural dialogue.
  • The potential of the award to further the applicant’s artistic goals and promote the arts in Canada.
  • The applicant’s record of academic excellence and community service.

Additional Requirements

At the end of the term, academic year or scheduled project duration, bursary recipients will produce a detailed report, including a sample of the work produced, which would be kept in the Silk Road Institute archives, displayed in an appropriate setting, or performed.

Application Procedure

Applicants must ensure that they complete the Application Form, and that their referee completes a Referee Form. Please note that a single Referee Form is to accompany each application. If multiple Reference Forms are received for an application, only the first form to be received will be considered.

All forms are also available in French.

The application deadline for the 2018-2019 bursary is July 13th, 2018. Confirmation of receipt of your application will be delivered by email. Results will be delivered by email approximately one month after the application deadline.
